Creative stories from the past with Dorengo: The Image Map
We are often asked which design templates are available for Dorengo, what the advantages are and which ideas they are great for. To demonstrate the endless possibilities of Dorengo, we had a look at the rich history of our beautiful hometown Trier. We put some objects into our NFC travelling museum to introduce the Dorengo Image Map to you in Part 1 of our blog series.
Digital tour through Trier
First of all, we thought of the city’s most famous son, and that is … quite clearly, Karl Marx. Even though he left Trier at the age of 17 it is easy to follow his traces in Trier – some of them are still visible today.
In our
travelling museum you will find a city map of 1824. These are the streets the
young Karl Marx (*1818) used to run around. With our image maps you can go on a
digital walk to visit some important places for Karl Marx (find out here howour travelling museums works). The city map always remains visible while
numerous pictures show important buildings and text describes monuments to Karl
Marx and his family in today’s landscape.

Look behind the picture
Additionally, the image map is a perfect tool to discover one of the many historical sites. The so-called Constantinian ceiling painting (“Konstantinische Deckenmalerei”) has kept some of its secrets until today. The late antique art work was found under the today’s cathedral in the middle of Trier’s city centre. The travelling museum brings the antique masterpiece from the museum into the living room – where some of its secrets can be solved!
For example, what does the light around the woman’s head mean? Or the jewellery box in her hand? What scientists have discovered in years of research is only one click away.

Completely
different and more playful approaches are also possible. The pompous lid of the
Ada Gospel in the Treasure Chamber of the Trier City Library is an outstanding
example of late medieval goldsmith’s art.
Numerous figures populate the lid. We
have made a search game out of it: Who can find the four evangelists?
A hint: Watch out for the animal symbols! If a wrong symbol is clicked on, the user is informed about it with some additional background information.

Fast and easy to implement
For all these examples we used the same template. Nevertheless, we were able to show content in a variety of exciting ways. Additionally, everything was implemented very quickly and without much effort. All you need is a good idea and then you can get started right away. And since many great ideas pop up in your head when you’re almost done, images, texts and videos can be edited or added at any time.
And what else?
Other ideas that we thought about include: Do you have a group portrait or group photo in your collection? When one the persons is touched, it “comes to life” – with original video footage and sound recordings. Or you can make the content more entertaining by adding meme-like sayings for each person! What could the persons think about each other, of the situation or what would they like to tell the viewer?
Imagine a picture that shows several stages of a story, for example from the Holy Bible. Don’t just describe the scene but let the viewer dive into the story. Image sections reveal important details and by comparing two pictures with each other it is easy to see how a place changed in centuries. Or compare the historic Bethlehem with the art works of the Dutch masters.
In addition, you can mark important elements of a document in the image map and provide translations, explanations, historical context and corresponding images. If the document deals with one specific person – like letters or identity documents – this opens up even more possibilities. With biographic details, funny anecdotes and episodes from their life, the personality behind the name “emerges” from the document.
